Who is the Holy Spirit?
The Holy Spirit is a divine person without a human body.
He is a disembodied, intangible and invisible reality. To say that the Holy Spirit is a Spirit is to say that He is an invisible reality.
He is the third person of the Godhead and is as much God as the Father and Jesus Christ the Son are.
The Holy Spirit is not just a mere influence or attitude – He is truly God, a divine personality.
As the Holy Spirit is a person, He must never be referred to as an “it” or a “force”.
3 But Peter said, “Ananias, why has Satan filled your heart to lie to the Holy Spirit and keep back part of the price of the land for yourself?
4 While it remained, was it not your own? And after it was sold, was it not in your own control? Why have you conceived this thing in your heart? You have not lied to men but to God.” Act 5:3, 4 (NKJV)
16 And I will pray the Father, and He will give you another Helper, that He may abide with you forever— 17 the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees Him nor knows Him; but you know Him, for He dwells with you and will be in you. 18 I will not leave you orphans; I will come to you. John 14:16-18 (NKJV)
In verse 18 The Holy Spirit has come to take the place of Jesus on the earth to be our closest friend.
But the Comforter, the Holy Spirit whom the Father will send in My name, He shall teach you all things and bring all things to your remembrance, whatever I have said to you. John 14:26 (NKJV)
But I tell you the truth, it is expedient for you that I go away; for if I do not go away, the Comforter will not come to you. But if I depart, I will send Him to you. John 16:7 (NKJV)
How important was the Holy Spirit to Jesus’s ministry here on earth?
When Jesus left Heaven, He laid aside all heavenly privileges and powers.
7 but made Himself of no reputation, taking the form of a bondservant, and coming in the likeness of men. Philippians 2:7 (NKJV)
Jesus Christ became a man, totally dependent on the Holy Spirit for power to perform healing and miracles.
John Baptizes Jesus
13 Then Jesus came from Galilee to John at the Jordan to be baptized by him. 14 And John tried to prevent Him, saying, “I need to be baptized by You, and are You coming to me?”
15 But Jesus answered and said to him, “Permit it to be so now, for thus it is fitting for us to fulfill all righteousness.” Then he allowed Him.
16 When He had been baptized, Jesus came up immediately from the water; and behold, the heavens were opened to Him, and He saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and alighting upon Him. 17 And suddenly a voice came from heaven, saying, “This is My beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.” Matthew 3:13-17 (NKJV)
38 how God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and with power, who went about doing good and healing all who were oppressed by the devil, for God was with Him. Act 10:38 (NKJV)
Jesus Christ’s ministry can only continue today through His children who receive the power and ability of the Holy Spirit as He did when He was on the earth.
49 Behold, I send the Promise of My Father upon you; but tarry in the city of Jerusalem until you are endued with power from on high.” Luke 24:49 (NKJV)
POWER – Dunamis in the Greek.
Means inherent power capable of reproducing itself from which we get our English word ‘dynamo.’
8 But you shall receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be witnesses to Me in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth.” Acts 1:8 (NKJV)
What does it mean to be filled with the Holy Spirit?
Jesus Christ is God’s gift to the sinner.
The Holy Spirit is God’s gift to His children.
17 the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees Him nor knows Him; but you know Him, for He dwells with you and will be in you. John 14:17 (NKJV)
5 So He came to a city of Samaria which is called Sychar, near the plot of ground that Jacob gave to his son Joseph. 6 Now Jacob’s well was there. Jesus therefore, being wearied from His journey, sat thus by the well. It was about the sixth hour.
7 A woman of Samaria came to draw water. Jesus said to her, “Give Me a drink.” 8 For His disciples had gone away into the city to buy food.
9 Then the woman of Samaria said to Him, “How is it that You, being a Jew, ask a drink from me, a Samaritan woman?” For Jews have no dealings with Samaritans.
10 Jesus answered and said to her, “If you knew the gift of God, and who it is who says to you, ‘Give Me a drink,’ you would have asked Him, and He would have given you living water.”
11 The woman said to Him, “Sir, You have nothing to draw with, and the well is deep. Where then do You get that living water? 12 Are You greater than our father Jacob, who gave us the well, and drank from it himself, as well as his sons and his livestock?”
13 Jesus answered and said to her, “Whoever drinks of this water will thirst again, 14 but whoever drinks of the water that I shall give him will never thirst. But the water that I shall give him will become in him a fountain of water springing up into everlasting life.” John 4:5-14 (NKJV)
A Christian is born of the Spirit and can be led by the Spirit, but God wants us to go on to being filled with the Holy Spirit.

Breathe on me, Holy Spirit. Pour out Your shining glory. Baptize me with power. Manifest Your presence with fire. I have been a scattered person. Gather me into Your one-ness. Send a mighty wind and bursts of flame. Let me hear and see and feel. And let me speak with new tongues, the languages of my heavenly home.
Heavenly Father, I want to experience all that You have in store for me in Christ Jesus. I am sorry for my pride that may have kept me from experiencing any part of the life in the Spirit. I do repent of this pride and I ask You to reveal Your life and love to me. I want You to take over my guidance and be my Master. I don’t know all that this means now, but I trust You to teach me. Father, I ask You to baptize me in Your Holy Spirit. I want all You have suffered to give me. O, Lord Jesus, I empty myself of all that I thought I knew if it stands in Your way of baptizing me in your Spirit. Pour out your power upon me so that I might live a life worthy of Your name. I thank You Father; I do now receive all of Jesus; I thank You Jesus, I do now receive all of Your Holy Spirit; I thank you Holy Spirit that You have made all this possible by Your faithful love. I thankfully pray in Jesus’ name. Amen.
Prayer to receive a fresh infilling of the Holy Spirit.
My Heavenly Father, I am your child and I believe in my heart that Jesus has been raised from the dead and I have confessed Him as my Lord. Jesus said, “How much more shall your Heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to those that ask Him.” I ask You now in the name of Jesus to fill me with the Holy Spirit. I step into the fullness and power that I desire in the name of Jesus. I confess that I am a Spirit-filled Christian. As I yield my vocal organs, I expect to speak in tongues for the Spirit gives me utterance in the name of Jesus. Praise the Lord!
